  The Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission, HYPPADEC, has stated that it will increase its efforts to provide relief to communities hosting hydroelectric dams in the country while mitigating the effects of flooding in these areas. The majority of Nigeria’s hydroelectric power is produced by six states: Niger, Kebbi, Kwara, Benue, Kogi, and Plateau.   The Taraba State government said it has concluded plans to sell off Taraba Beverages Nigeria Ltd, the producers of Mambilla Highland Tea, to private investors. Ezikiel Iliya, the Managing Director of the Taraba Investment and Property Development, disclosed this on Wednesday while speaking to newsmen in Jalingo. He explained that the function of the agency was to build government corporations and transfer them to private investors. This development is coming barely ten days after the Bauchi State government announced its concluded plan to hand over the ownership of Zaranda International Hotels and five other companies in the state to private entities. This decision was greeted with public criticism, especially from the opposition. Residents of Taraba State, especially those in rural areas now live in fear as bandits and kidnappers have invaded their communities. LEADERSHIP correspondent reports that even Jalingo, the state capital and other urban areas are not spared as residents are frequently killed and abducted for huge ransom before they are freed by the criminals. Among the victims is the traditional ruler of Yukuben in Takum local government area, Udeng Ibrahim, who was recently kidnapped with his son. They were eventually killed in the process. Also, suspected Boko Haram members attacked Jouro Manu town in Gassol local government area, killing three people and kidnapping six others. “At about 1:00am on that fateful day at Jouro Nuvo, a sub-urban of Jalingo, the kidnappers stormed the area on foot while the residents were still in bed, there were heavy gunshots,” a resident said. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) says 3,610 suspected cases of cholera have been recorded in Nigeria from January 2022 to July 2022. The agency in its recent cholera situation update said 31 states reported suspected cholera cases in 2022. The states are Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ekiti, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara. Of these states Taraba recorded the highest number with 676 cases, followed by Cross River with 650 and Katsina with 378 cases.   Two aspirants have sought to join the suit challenging the nomination of Col Dantala Kefas Agbu (Rtd) as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Taraba State. Professor Joseph Albasu and Dr Hilkiah Bubajoda Mafindi filed the applications as interested parties in the suit at a Federal High Court, Jalingo, the state capital, through their counsel, Dr Reuben Atabo (SAN).   The suit, brought by Professor Jerome Nyameh, is challenging Agbu’s election over the violation of Part VII, Article 1 of the Electoral Guidelines for the Primary Elections of PDP, 2022, having failed to resign as the state party chairman. Nyameh submitted that the primary was held on May 25, which was only six days after Agbu resigned, and many days after the screening of aspirants on April 28, when he was still the state party chairman.   President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the establishment of three additional orthopedic hospitals. Health Minister, Osagie Ehanire, made the announcement on Wednesday at the inauguration of the Primary Health Care(PHC) Leadership Challenge at the State House. The event was organised by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) in collaboration with development partners. Ehanire disclosed that the President approved siting of the orthopedic hospital in three regions. “North-East has one; the North-Central has one and the South-South has one; in Benin, Jos and Jalingo respectively”, NAN quoted him saying.   Taraba State residents have been advised to adhere strictly to good hygiene over the outbreak of monkeypox in the state. The State Director, Immunisation and Disease Control, Dr. Kenneth Tijos, yesterday, at a stakeholders’ engagement meeting on the introduction of the new ROTAvirus vaccine, admitted that “there are confirmed cases of monkeypox in Taraba State”. The government told the people not to panic, but to adhere strictly to relevant measures that would halt the virus from spreading.   The Federal Government has secured  5.6 hectares of land in Jalingo from the Taraba government for the construction of a federal secretariat complex.Mr Ahmed Rabiu, the Controller of Housing, Taraba Field Office of the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, said this on Friday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jalingo.Rabiu said that all the procedures required for the award of the contract had almost been completed.
