The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has given kudos to Judiciary for, according to it, showing that it remains the window of hope for democracy to strive in this country. The party's observation followed on Thursday's Supreme Court's judgment affirming the gubernatorial candidate of the party, Darius Ishaku, as the validly elected governor of Taraba State. According to a statement issued by the Acting National Chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus, in Abuja on Thursday, the "bold and patriotic approach of the Supreme Court of the land in the various tribunal cases goes a long way to show that it is indeed the last hope of the down trodden." It added: "Without such landmark judgments from the Supreme Court perhaps there would have been no Nigeria and we salute them for their courage in delivering justice to the people. Without a doubt, the judgement by the Taraba State Governorship Election petition Tribunal which nullified the victory of incumbent governor, Arch. Taraba Football Club players early on Friday besieged the state government house Jalingo to protest 11 months unpaid salaries by the state government. The protesting players locked the gate of the government house and prevented workers from entering their offices for several hours. The players complained that match bonuses for last year and this year’s league had not been paid to them. Top government officials including the Chief of Staff at the government house Mr. Rebo Usman's effort to send the players away failed as they insisted that they won't leave until they were paid their outstanding salaries. -Daily Trust

The senior special adviser to Taraba State governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Slyvanus Yakubu Giwa, has said that the appellate court would soon revise the verdict of the Taraba State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal that ordered Governor Darius Ishaku to vacate office. Giwa, who stated this yesterday in Jalingo during an exclusive interview with LEADERSHIP said the tribunal’s judgement has cast shadow of despair on the nation’s democratic journey and must not be allowed to stand in any way. The President of the Court of Appeal Justice Zainab Adamu Bulkachuwa is to determine where the appeal filed by Governor Darius Dickson Ishaku of Taraba State would be entertained, The Nation gathered Monday. Usually, the Court of Appeal in Yola, Adamawa State has the jurisdiction and entertains the appeal cases from Taraba. Ahead of the Appeal Court Judgement on the governorship election in Taraba State, a youth group from the State has called for peace and calm, despite the outcome. The National Association of Taraba State Youth Stakeholder Forum, at a press briefing in Abuja, expressed resentment over the ruling of the election petition tribunal which sacked the state governor, Arc. Darius Ishaku. Speaking on behalf of the group, the national coordinator, Joseph Bulama Kwagh, decried the breakdown of law and order especially in Wukari and its environs where lives and properties worth billions of naira were lost and destroyed. The Taraba State governor, Arch. Darius Ishaku has filed an appeal against the judgement of the Taraba state election petitions sitting in Abuja. The tribunal had about three weeks ago remoeved the state governor and declared his opponent in the election, Hajia Aisha Alhassan of the All Progressive Congress (APC) as the winner of the election. In the appeal, the governor is challenging the powers of the tribunal to base its ruling on pre- election matter. A statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the governor, Sylvanus Yakubu Giwa, said the governor’s action is to ensure that he meets the stipulated 21 days in the electoral act. Governor Ishaku also restated his believe in the ability of the judiciary to stand on the truth that he was sponsored by the PDP and that he is the actual winner of the governorship election. A group known as Taraba Volunteers for good governance has assured Tarabans that the appeal court would revise the ruling of the Taraba State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal that sacked the incumbent governor from office. Briefing journalists yesterday in Jalingo, the chairman of the group, Alhaji Abdulkadir Zanzago said the tribunal’s ruling was as an affront to democracy. He stressed that in line with Senator Aisha’s pleadings, the tribunal would have dismissed her petition on the ground of incompetence after she had proceeded to aver facts inconsistent with her grounds of petition.
