  The Taraba State House of Assembly on Wednesday passed the Violence and Discrimination Against Persons Prohibition Bill (2021) into law. The new law proposes the death sentence for anyone who has carnal  knowledge of a child and life imprisonment for transgenders in the state. The sponsor of the Bill and Speaker of the state House of Assembly Dr Joseph Albasu Kunini, said that as leaders the House members have a moral responsibility to protect the public from gross moral decadence that is quickly engulfing the world with grave consequences.   The battle for supremacy between Deputy Minority Leader Senator Emmanuel Bwacha, Taraba South, entered a new level Tuesday, as the Senator dragged Governor Darius Ishaku to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) through a petition of his own. Recall that Governor Ishaku had also petitioned the anti graft body through two of his aides alleging misapplication of constituency funds. Darius Petition had earlier suffered a set back after it was thrown out by the ICPC. The petitioners are now asking the EFCC to do a "better job than the one ICPC did".  But in a counter move, Bwacha has also fired a petition to the EFCC. In a strongly worded document signed by Bwacha's aides, the senator is accusing Gov. Darius of throwing the state into unnecessary debt.   A visitation panel to Taraba State Polytechnic , Suntai set up by Governor Darius Ishaku seems to have uncovered what can be best described as a daylight looting of almost a billion of naira meant for the development of the polytechnic between 2015 and 2019. The Panel in its report which was exclusively obtained by Taraba Truth and Fact Newspaper showed details of how management led by a former Rector of the institution Mr. Daniel Mom and a former Bursar of the Polytechnic Hon.   Inability of world leaders to come up with vaccines to eradicate Lassa fever in Africa 52 years after its outbreak has become a source of concern to stakeholders in Taraba State. A forum organised at the weekend by the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jalingo, and facilitated by Kinestic Integrated Project Limited on Lassa fever public awareness, cited the way resources were mobilised to discover vaccines for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), wondering why same effort could not be put towards Lassa fever eradication. The stakeholders, who unanimously agreed to tread extra legitimate paths to curb the spread of the disease in their various domains and in the state at large, urged medical experts in the country and the world at large to begin the process of coming out with a vaccine that would help in eradicating the disease.  The Taraba State Government has warned people of the state especially residents of the state capital and it’s suburbs against Indiscriminate bush burning. The warning is imperative to avert any outbreak of fire disaster in the state during this dry season often accompanied by windstorm. The Government has also directed leadership of hunters Association to stop their members particularly those always on hunting expedition to guide against setting fire to bush to avert the spread of wild bush fires to nearby vulnerable communities. According to the Government, anyone caught violating its directive will be treated as saboteur and punished accordingly. It adviced farmers of economic trees including those engaged in dry season farming to do fire tracing to protect their farms from bush fires. Demarcation and survey of land, the first sign of physical construction activities, have been observed at the $5.7 billion (about N5.3 trillion) 3,050MW Mambilla hydropower project site in Taraba State, about 35 years after it was conceived. According to Aaron Artimas, spokesman to the Minister of Power, Engr. Sale Mamman, the project was reviewed with the coming of the minister, adding that aside signing the pact with the state government, the land and aerial survey of the project site was renegotiated for N350 million. The Mambilla hydropower project is expected to increase the national grid by 30 per cent when completed. The contract cost is worth $5.7bn with 85 per cent funding ($4.85bn) from the Chinese Export-Import Bank (EXIM) while the federal government is providing a counterpart funding of $850 million which is the balance of 15 per cent.   After spending four days in captivity, the kidnapped Taraba State Governor’s aide Baba Bala has been released by his abductors in Jalingo, the state capital. He was released in the early hours of Saturday at Gongon Maliki, a suburb of Jalingo metropolis. The state’s acting police public relations officer ASP Leha Reform confirmed this to Channels Television in a telephone interview. Leha disclosed that the Governor’s aide has undergone a medical check-up and reunited with his family. “I can confirm to you that we received a report of his release from his abductors and has been moved to a hospital for medical attention and has since reunited with his family. “The police will not rest on its oars until it ensures that those behind this act are apprehended and justice served.   A police officer was reportedly killed, yesterday, as gunmen attacked a Mobile Police checkpoint in Chanchanji village of Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State. Local sources said the gunmen, who rode on motorcycles, opened fire on the police officers manning the checkpoint, killing an officer, while four other passersby sustained injuries in the attack. It was gathered that the gunmen after killing the officer allegedly made away with his rifle. A resident of Chanchanji said the gunmen, who came from the Benue State side of the Taraba/Benue border opened fire at a checkpoint mounted by the police, killing one of the officers on duty. He said: “The gunmen rode on three motorcycles and passed at a high speed heading towards the bridge about 6:50 am. “After a while, we heard gunshots, but because of the insecurity around here, we did not rush to the area.   The project will cover the electricity needs of about 80% of the southern Taraba State. Gamesa Electric has commissioned the new Kashimbila Hydropower Station in Nigeria, where we have installed four 12.1 MVA  Gamesa Electric vertical hydro generators . The plant will provide 40 MW to the national grid and will cover the electricity needs of about 80% of the southern Taraba State. The plant is located in the Kashimbila dam, that will also be used to provide drinking water and will also feed irrigation systems in the region. Nigeria is rich in water resources and has and ambitious growth target for hydropower development, along with other renewable sources, to contribute to reducing the carbon footprint and meet the growing energy demand in the urban areas of the region.   Unknown gunmen, in the early hours of Sunday, invaded the resident of the chairman of Nigerian Labour Congres (NLC) Peter Jediel and forcefully abducted him in the presence of his family members. Jediel who doubles as the Chairman Health workers Union Taraba State Chapter was said to be kidnapped in  his village in Sunkani, the Headquarters of Ardo Kola Local Government Area of Taraba state.
