Disco disconnects Taraba Govt House over N74m bills

The Yola Electricity Distribution Company has disconnected power supply to the Taraba State Government House over N74 million unpaid electricity bills, Daily Trust learnt yesterday.

The power cut, it was learnt, followed the inability of the state government to offset its five months outstanding bills covering January to May 2015.
The electricity company had on April 16 written a letter to the state acting governor asking for payment of the outstanding bill to avoid disconnection.
“In line with the new Yola Electricity Distribution Company management’s drive for the collection of outstanding debts owed the company by electricity consumers under its jurisdiction, a careful examination of our authenticated records revealed that the Taraba State government’s accounts have an authenticated debt of N60,356,978.41 as at April, 2015”, the letter said.
It was learnt that as at May 2015, the outstanding bills being owed the company by the government increased to N74 million, a situation which forced the company to cut power supply.
Checks by our correspondent at the Taraba Government House yesterday showed that it was being powered by a generator.

Taraba Begins ₦5,000 Deduction for Teachers’ Permanent Identity Cards

The Taraba State Universal Basic Education Board (TSUBEB) has initiated a ₦5,000 deduction from teachers as part of arrangements for the production of Permanent Identity Cards for teachers across the state. According to UBEC, the identity cards are expected to strengthen staff records, improve security and enhance administrative efficiency in the management of teachers across Taraba State. UBEC further said the Permanent Identity Card project is also expected to assist the state government in developing an accurate and verifiable database of teachers. Such a database will provide Governor Agbu Kefas with reliable information on personnel within the basic education system and support more effective planning, monitoring and personnel management. The initiative is therefore expected to strengthen security measures, improve staff verification and provide a more efficient system for managing personnel across Taraba State’s basic education sector.
