The Honourable Minister of State for Regional Development, H.E. Uba Maigari Ahmadu, has inspected the ongoing construction of the 9-span, 180-metre Fori Galtimari Bridge in Jere Local Government Area of Borno State.
The inspection has, however, drawn attention to the prolonged condition of the Namnai Bridge in Taraba State, the Minister’s home state, which collapsed more than two years ago and has yet to be reconstructed.
The Namnai Bridge, located along a major route in Taraba, has remained a major source of hardship for residents, motorists and other road users since its collapse. The absence of a functional bridge has severely disrupted movement and commercial activities in the area.
Residents and road users have also raised concerns over the cost of crossing the Namnai River, with motorists reportedly paying substantial amounts to navigate the difficult alternative crossing arrangements.
The situation has also been linked by local residents to loss of lives, as travellers have continued to face dangerous conditions while attempting to cross the river in the absence of a permanent bridge.
While the Minister’s inspection of the Fori Galtimari Bridge highlights the importance of bridge infrastructure to regional development, the situation at Namnai has raised questions among Tarabans about the level of attention being given to critical infrastructure challenges in the state.
For communities around Namnai, the demand remains straightforward: the reconstruction of the collapsed bridge to restore safe movement, reduce the financial burden on motorists and ease the hardship faced by residents.
At the time of filing this report, there had been no indication of an immediate reconstruction of the Namnai Bridge from the information available, leaving affected communities waiting for a permanent solution to the crisis.
