Policeman Commits Suicide In Taraba Government House



A policeman, Corporal Samuel Milar, in the early hours of Thursday, shot himself dead inside the Taraba State Government House, Jalingo.

Though the reasons for killing himself is yet to be ascertained, Milar, who was one of the security detail attached to Governor Danbaba Suntai, shot himself at about 6:15 am with his rifle shortly after signing for the rifle at about 5:52 a.m.

Confirming the incident in a telephone interview, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Jibril Olawale Adeniji, said the command had commenced investigations to determine whether Milar was killed as a result of accidental discharge or whether he actually took his own life.

According to him, “I can confirm to you that Milar was killed today inside the Government House. The incident occurred in the early hours of the day but we have commenced investigations into the matter to determine whether he was killed as a result of accidental discharge or he deliberately shot himself. We’ll make our findings known as soon as we conclude investigations into the matter,” he stated.

Debunking rumours making the round that Milar killed himself in protest of his redeployment, the police boss dismissed the reports, insisting that the late policeman was never transferred or redeployed as being insinuated.

Meanwhile, the remains of late Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Hon Haruna Tsokwa, was yesterday laid to rest in Takum, his hometown amidst pomp and outpouring of eulogies and tributes.

The ancient city of Takum was at stand still as shops and business premises were closed down in honour of the late Speaker who was roundly acknowledged as a very kind and generous man who lived his life in service to his people and community.

Dignitaries from all walks of life were in attendance to witness the burial of Tsokwa who though spent a very short time at the helm of affairs of the assembly but left an indelible mark on the political firmament of the state and would be remembered for his principled stand on the political issues in the state occasioned by the return of Governor Suntai to the state late August after spending ten months in German and American hospitals where he was treated for the injuries he sustained in a plane crash in October 2012.


Among the dignitaries that graced the occasion was the acting governor of the state, Alhaji Garba Umar, Chairman of NIMASA, Col Agbu Kefas (rtd), former Minister of Water Resources, Chief Obadiah Ando; Supervising Minister for Environment and Minister of State for Niger Delta, Mr. Darius Ishaku; Speaker, Benue State House of Assembly, Hon Emmanuel Ayua and Nigeria’s Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago, Ambassador Musa John.

Others present on the occasion were new Speaker of the state assembly, Hon. Josiah Sabo Kente as well as five former Speakers of the assembly namely  Hon. Amidu Suleiman, Hon. Simon Shimbu, Hon Simon Dogari,  Hon Habu Isa Ajiya and Hon Ibrahim Oseni, President of DSK Foundation, Chief David Sabo Kente and Architect Aliyu Sunday Dankaro and other top government functionaries.

Taraba Begins ₦5,000 Deduction for Teachers’ Permanent Identity Cards

The Taraba State Universal Basic Education Board (TSUBEB) has initiated a ₦5,000 deduction from teachers as part of arrangements for the production of Permanent Identity Cards for teachers across the state. According to UBEC, the identity cards are expected to strengthen staff records, improve security and enhance administrative efficiency in the management of teachers across Taraba State. UBEC further said the Permanent Identity Card project is also expected to assist the state government in developing an accurate and verifiable database of teachers. Such a database will provide Governor Agbu Kefas with reliable information on personnel within the basic education system and support more effective planning, monitoring and personnel management. The initiative is therefore expected to strengthen security measures, improve staff verification and provide a more efficient system for managing personnel across Taraba State’s basic education sector.
