Over 700 cases have been reported and confirmed in Taraba state between January and March 2016.

The State Officer, Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme, Dr Markus Nzunde gave the statistics in an interview with Taravoices correspondent in his office at the Federal Medical Centre, Jalingo.
Tuberculosis or T.B as it is popularly called, is an airborne disease caused by bacteria and is spread from person to person.
T.B usually affects Lungs but it can affect other parts of the body such as the brain, kidney or the spine and people with Tuberculosis can die if they do not get proper treatment.
It is in the light of the above that Taravoices reporter visited the Taraba State Head Office of the Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control programme, where the programme officer Dr. Markus Nzunde gave an update.
Giving the statistics, Dr. Nzunde explained that about 3000 cases of T.B were recorded and confirmed in Taraba state last  year and over 700 new cases have also being reported and confirmed between January and March, 2016 which is quite disheartening.
He enumerated cough, fever, weight loss, blood in mucus, chest pain and night sweats as the major symptoms of Tuberculosis.
Dr Markus Nzunde while advising T.B patients to take their treatments very seriously and go for regular check ups, called on the public to always sleep in well ventilated rooms to control the spread, announcing that based on the current statistics the most affected ones are the poor and low economic people hence, the need to intensify more support for the programme.
On Leprosy, the programme officer said last year the state recorded only 44 cases while about 21 new cases were also recorded across the state between January and March 2016.
Dr Nzunde pointed out that stigmatization against people with leprosy discourages those with the symptoms from availing themselves of the opportunity provided by the centres across the grassroots, stressing that if they do not come for medical attention they might be deformed permanently.
According to the Taraba state programme officer of Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme, “since the creation of the state the programme has been donor dependent, only this year that Governor Darius Dickson Ishaku paid the counterpart funds which has help in improving their services in all the 85 health centres that provide care to T.B and Leprosy people across the state between January and March 2016”.

Taraba Begins ₦5,000 Deduction for Teachers’ Permanent Identity Cards

The Taraba State Universal Basic Education Board (TSUBEB) has initiated a ₦5,000 deduction from teachers as part of arrangements for the production of Permanent Identity Cards for teachers across the state. According to UBEC, the identity cards are expected to strengthen staff records, improve security and enhance administrative efficiency in the management of teachers across Taraba State. UBEC further said the Permanent Identity Card project is also expected to assist the state government in developing an accurate and verifiable database of teachers.
