President of the group, Abdullahi Sule,in a statement said the ruling which returned Darius Ishaku of the Peoples Democratic Party, as duly elected governor of the state, was unexpected.
He said following the events that occurred in the state before the
elections, most people expected that the Appeal Court would uphold the
tribunal ruling which sacked Darius Ishaku and returned candidate of
the All Progressive Congress (APC) Hajiya Aisha Alhassan, as winner of
the poll.
He lamented that the judges, by the ruling disappointed the masses, who depend on the judiciary for justice.
“We were indeed shocked by the ruling. We followed the events from
the beginning; the PDP did not conduct Primaries, because the party
wanted to impose a candidate.
Those who had the support of delegates were edged out, so they were
in a crisis situation during that period. We all know they did not hold
Primaries “, he said.
Sule lamented that ” even during the election, many people could not vote because of violence in parts of the state.
“Despite the fact that the PDP did not have a validly nominated
candidate for the election, there were cases of violence and
malpractices in parts of the state, so anyway you look at it, Darius
Ishaku was not the peoples choice and as such should not have been
returned as the duly elected governor”, he said.
He hailed the APC candidate for her steadfastness and commitment to the struggle and assured her of the masses support.
He lamented that the people of Taraba have not been lucky in the area
of governance, adding that they deserve a chance “just like other
states of the Federation”.
“We call on the judges of the Supreme Court to look at the merits of
the case and give us, the people of Taraba justice”, he said.
He called on supporters of the APC to be calm, saying that justice will prevail at the end of the day.
“Truth will always triumph against falsehood, so we are positive that
Hajia Aisha Alhassan will emerge victorious at the Supreme Court. She
has recorded many firsts in male dominated fields, and we are very
confident that she will be sworn in as the first elected female governor
of the state, just as we are confident that she will deliver on
electoral promises”, he said.
He warned against actions that could truncate the nation’s democracy,
saying since “we are growing our democracy, it is important for
stakeholders to avoid anything that could be seen as supporting impunity
and illegality”.
“If this ruling is allowed to stand, it will amount to promoting
godfatherism. We all know how Darius emerged, just as we are aware of the
fact that Hajia Aisha has nobody behind her. All her accomplishments
were based on hard work”, he added.
He urged the Supreme Court to restore the confidence of the masses in the judiciary by up turning the ruling.
