Elect Gov with vision, capacity to take Taraba forward – Ex-NLC boss, Kataps tells residents



Comrade Jonah Kataps, a former chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Taraba State chapter, has urged residents of the state, irrespective of religious differences, to pray fervently for a candidate that has “vision, direction and the capacity to move Taraba to the 21st century”.

Kataps, who today took DAILY POST down memory lane, expressed dismay at the way and manner the affairs of the state is being run by Governor Darius Ishaku.

Citing the present debt profile of the state which has continued to be on the rise, lack of payments of pension and gratuity arrears, he urged residents to be careful when electing leaders in the forthcoming political dispensation.

“Taraba people should be very careful with the kind of choice they will make in 2023,” he said.

Wondering why the state has continued to move backward despite the abundant human and natural resources it possesses, he said “there are a lot of issues on ground that need to be addressed.”

He urged residents to avoid past mistakes, urging them to eschew sentiment by going for leaders that would catapult the state to greater heights in the next political dispensation slated for 2021.

Kataps, who was also the former state chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), passionately pleaded with the people of the state to ” drop everything that has to do with sentiments, and look for a competent person that can lead.”

“What I mean by leading people, I mean someone that will run an inclusive government that all sectors of the state will be carried along.

“As it is now, Central Taraba has been marginalized in terms of political appointments in this government.”

Kataps expressed sadness that the government has hijacked the machinery of electing the leadership of all the labour unions in the state, insisting that the union will continue to go cap in hand should they fail to liberate themselves from the government.

“As long as they are doing that, things won’t change, of course those that are doing that, they are doing it with the thinking that they want to have the temperature in their control, that’s not a good philosophy, the best thing is to allow workers to elect leaders of their choice and find a way of working with them that is what makes it a democratic society.


“When you want to hijack leadership of various unions so that they will not protest poor policies of the government that is dictatorship, that’s no longer democracy, unfortunately, that is what is obtained here in Taraba,” he said.

Taraba Begins ₦5,000 Deduction for Teachers’ Permanent Identity Cards

The Taraba State Universal Basic Education Board (TSUBEB) has initiated a ₦5,000 deduction from teachers as part of arrangements for the production of Permanent Identity Cards for teachers across the state. According to UBEC, the identity cards are expected to strengthen staff records, improve security and enhance administrative efficiency in the management of teachers across Taraba State. UBEC further said the Permanent Identity Card project is also expected to assist the state government in developing an accurate and verifiable database of teachers. Such a database will provide Governor Agbu Kefas with reliable information on personnel within the basic education system and support more effective planning, monitoring and personnel management. The initiative is therefore expected to strengthen security measures, improve staff verification and provide a more efficient system for managing personnel across Taraba State’s basic education sector.
