NULGE embarks on indefinite strike in Taraba

THE Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) on Tuesday paralyzed activities at all the local government councils in Taraba State.
With this development, public servants in the entire 16 councils of the state commenced an indefinite strike pending when the government deemed it fit to meet with their demands.
The union, it would be recalled had earlier doled out series of ultimatum to the government which The Guardian learnt was treated with disdain.
In their earlier warning, the union felt sad that in spite of the bailout fund made available to the state by the Federal Government, the state government failed to ignite the much needed smiles on the faces of council workers.
In one of their warning letters made available to The Guardian, the leadership of the union expressed dismay at the lukewarm attitude of the government whom according to them “ deliberately refused to address the plights of council workers since they received the bailout.”
Signed by the union state secretary, Garba Adamu, the union, according to the statement “ observed with dismay that, the government expanded the bailout without a second thought to pay the arrears of the salaries for the local government workers.”
They agreed that government action towards the workers is aimed at crippling the local government workers financially despite the forthcoming Christmas festivity, hence the need for the union to tread all legitimate paths to halt the government from continue relegating to the background council workers.
Speaking with The Guardian on a telephone, the secretary of the union said no amount of persuasion would debar the union from disembarking on the strike.
Adamu who stated that “ there is no going back” said NULGE leadership at the councils level, are leaving no stone unturned to ensure full compliance among members.
No amount of harassment and intimidation, according to the members would discourage them from going on with the strike pending when the government see wisdom in attending to their demands.
Apart from NULGE, more labour unions, may down their tools.

Taraba Begins ₦5,000 Deduction for Teachers’ Permanent Identity Cards

The Taraba State Universal Basic Education Board (TSUBEB) has initiated a ₦5,000 deduction from teachers as part of arrangements for the production of Permanent Identity Cards for teachers across the state. According to UBEC, the identity cards are expected to strengthen staff records, improve security and enhance administrative efficiency in the management of teachers across Taraba State. UBEC further said the Permanent Identity Card project is also expected to assist the state government in developing an accurate and verifiable database of teachers. Such a database will provide Governor Agbu Kefas with reliable information on personnel within the basic education system and support more effective planning, monitoring and personnel management. The initiative is therefore expected to strengthen security measures, improve staff verification and provide a more efficient system for managing personnel across Taraba State’s basic education sector.
