Kidnapped doctors: NMA seeks Taraba gov’s intervention

The Nigerian Medical Association has said it has written a letter to the Governor of Taraba State, Darius Ishaku, to help secure the release of the two doctors kidnapped in the state on March 10.

Sunday Oduniya and Audu Sule’s abductors demanded a huge ransom for their release, and after negotiations, N12.3m was paid for their release.

However, the NMA said despite the payment, the doctors had yet to be released by the hoodlums.

In an interview with our correspondent on Tuesday, the Secretary General of the association, Dr Muyiwa Odusote, said they had been making efforts to ensure their release.

Also, the Chairman of Taraba State NMA, Dr Danga Danga, said in a separate interview with our correspondent on the telephone that they had approached the governor, hoping that the effort would lead to the release of their members.

Danga said, “The two doctors have not been released by their abductors. We met with the leadership of security agencies and they told us the efforts they were making. We then wrote a letter to the governor to intervene in order to secure our members’ release. As it is now, we are hoping for the best.”

He added that the police had made some arrests.

The NMA chief said, “The police said they were patrolling the suspected area (where the doctors are kept) and that they had made a few arrests, hoping that would lead them to the camp where they were being kept.”

Taraba Begins ₦5,000 Deduction for Teachers’ Permanent Identity Cards

The Taraba State Universal Basic Education Board (TSUBEB) has initiated a ₦5,000 deduction from teachers as part of arrangements for the production of Permanent Identity Cards for teachers across the state. According to UBEC, the identity cards are expected to strengthen staff records, improve security and enhance administrative efficiency in the management of teachers across Taraba State. UBEC further said the Permanent Identity Card project is also expected to assist the state government in developing an accurate and verifiable database of teachers. Such a database will provide Governor Agbu Kefas with reliable information on personnel within the basic education system and support more effective planning, monitoring and personnel management. The initiative is therefore expected to strengthen security measures, improve staff verification and provide a more efficient system for managing personnel across Taraba State’s basic education sector.
