KILLINGS: Troops broker peace between Tiv, Jukun in Benue, Taraba

Troops of the Operation Whirl-Stroke (OPWS) of the Nigeria Army yesterday brokered peace between warring Jukun and Tiv people of Taraba and Benue states as part of its non-kinetic operation to bring about peaceful coexistence in the two states.

OPWS Force Commander, Major-General Adeyemi Yekini, who disclosed this to journalists in Makurdi said the meeting which took place at Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State, had stakeholders drawn from the two ethnic groups such as political leaders, traditional rulers, opinion leaders and the youth, among others, in attendance.

Major-General Yekini said the peace meeting became inevitable as part of strategies to douse the intractable feud between the Tiv in Benue and Jukun in Taraba states, respectively.

He told journalists that the purpose of the meeting was to strike a peace deal between the two ethnic groups.

According to him, the crisis between the two were in two dimensions, explaining that it was a crisis between Jukun and Tiv in Benue and between Jukun and Tiv in Taraba, which had resulted into loss of lives and property.

He also stressed the need for both ethnic groups to embrace peace and live together as one, adding that opportunities were given to leaders of both warring sides to speak their minds with a view to finding a lasting solution to the crisis.

“At the end of the deliberation, both ethnic groups agreed to embrace peace and also agreed on the immediate reopening of the Gbeji-Kente-Wukari road, which had remained closed since the beginning of the crisis in April 2019.”

Taraba Begins ₦5,000 Deduction for Teachers’ Permanent Identity Cards

The Taraba State Universal Basic Education Board (TSUBEB) has initiated a ₦5,000 deduction from teachers as part of arrangements for the production of Permanent Identity Cards for teachers across the state. According to UBEC, the identity cards are expected to strengthen staff records, improve security and enhance administrative efficiency in the management of teachers across Taraba State. UBEC further said the Permanent Identity Card project is also expected to assist the state government in developing an accurate and verifiable database of teachers. Such a database will provide Governor Agbu Kefas with reliable information on personnel within the basic education system and support more effective planning, monitoring and personnel management. The initiative is therefore expected to strengthen security measures, improve staff verification and provide a more efficient system for managing personnel across Taraba State’s basic education sector.
