Plot to impeach Taraba speaker, principal officers thickens

There was tension in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital on Friday following alleged plot to impeach the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Mr Abel Diah, and other principal officers of the House.
It was alleged that Governor Darius Ishaku was behind the plot to effect the leadership change in the House.

Sources in the Taraba Government House told our correspondent on Friday that the governor was angry with the way the embattled deputy speaker, Mohammed Gwampo, was removed without his consent.

The governor, it was gathered, wanted the leadership change in the House to have people who will not question his decisions.

The frosty relationship between the governor and the House was said to be the reason why the list of commissioner nominees had yet to be sent to the Assembly for confirmation more than six months after his inauguration.

A Government House said the governor has mobilised funds for the impeachment of the Speaker and the principal officers, adding that the move might scale through if everything went according to plan.

The Majority Leader of the House, Joseph Albasu Kunini, who felt betrayed by the House has been tipped to replace the Speaker if the plot succeeds.

But a member of the House, who pleaded anonymity, said God will not allow Governor Ishaku to perfect his evil plot against the people of the State.

The lawmaker dismissed the rumour that the mace of the House was taken away with the intention of impeaching the Speaker at an undisclosed location.

When contacted the Senior Special Assistant to Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr Bala Dan-Abu, said he would not comment on the issue, saying the lawmakers were capable of speaking for themselves.

Taraba Begins ₦5,000 Deduction for Teachers’ Permanent Identity Cards

The Taraba State Universal Basic Education Board (TSUBEB) has initiated a ₦5,000 deduction from teachers as part of arrangements for the production of Permanent Identity Cards for teachers across the state. According to UBEC, the identity cards are expected to strengthen staff records, improve security and enhance administrative efficiency in the management of teachers across Taraba State. UBEC further said the Permanent Identity Card project is also expected to assist the state government in developing an accurate and verifiable database of teachers. Such a database will provide Governor Agbu Kefas with reliable information on personnel within the basic education system and support more effective planning, monitoring and personnel management. The initiative is therefore expected to strengthen security measures, improve staff verification and provide a more efficient system for managing personnel across Taraba State’s basic education sector.
