The Government Day Secondary School (GDSS) Mallum, a public secondary school in Mallum community, Ardokola Local Government Area of Taraba State is in a state of total collapse, raising fresh concerns over the neglect of public education under the present administration of Governor Agbu Kefas.
Photographs obtained by SaharaReporters on Saturday showed three different blocks of the school in ruins.
The images show a long classroom block painted in faded yellow with its green roof completely blown off on one side, windows shattered and walls stained with rainwater.
Another block has a large section of the roof caved in, exposing the wooden truss, with debris littered around the compound.
A third image shows an interior view with daylight piercing through the collapsed roof, and broken ceiling boards hanging dangerously over what should be a classroom.
Residents who spoke to SaharaReporters on condition of anonymity for fear of victimisation said the school has remained in this condition for months, forcing students to take lessons in dilapidated structures that are neither safe nor conducive for learning.
They said whenever it rains, classes are abruptly disrupted and students are sent home.
According to them, GDSS Mallum is the only government secondary school serving Mallum and neighbouring communities and its collapse means hundreds of students, mostly from poor homes are being denied their right to quality education.
They lamented that while the Taraba State Government under Governor Kefas has repeatedly promised to give priority to education, schools like GDSS Mallum have been abandoned.
"This is a government school, not a private one. If government cannot maintain its own school, where will our children go? We are appealing to Governor Kefas, the Commissioner for Education and the Chairman of Ardokola LGA to come to our aid and renovate GDSS Mallum before the building kills our children," one of the residents said.
The community is calling for immediate assessment and comprehensive renovation of the school, including reroofing, provision of furniture, windows and learning materials.
