ELECTON TRIBUNAL: APC Witnesses said Election was not credible because of over voting



The All Progressives Congress (APC) agents at the April 11 governorship election in Taraba have challenged the credibility of the poll before the state’s Election Petition Tribunal. The party’s agents witnessed on oath on Thursday at the tribunal sitting in Abuja.

The witnesses testified in the suit filed by the APC governorship candidate, Sen. Aisha Alhassan, who is contesting the election of Gov. Darius Ishaku of the PDP. They were all examined by all the counsel involved in the suit. The counsels were Mr Mahmud Abubakar (SAN), counsel to the Alhassan, Mr Kanu Agabi (SAN), counsel to Ishaku, Mr Solo Akuma (SAN), counsel to PDP and Mr Abayomi Akanmode, counsel to INEC.

Most of the witnesses told the tribunal to investigate the results that came out of their various polling units. They told the tribunal that they hailed from Bali Local Government Area of Taraba and did file their witnesses on oath to the tribunal at Jalingo on May 15.

One of the agents, Mr Tahiru Yusuf, said that the election was not credible because of the incidences of over voting at his ward in Suntai. Another agent, Mr Hassan Abubakar, told the tribunal that he discovered that there was over voting in his polling unit. “I don’t want the election nullified, but I want the tribunal to carefully look at the code of conduct at the polls,’’ Abubakar said.

Mohammed Umar said that the APC candidate, Alhassan did not lose the election, while Ismaila Bawari, from Kanmata Ward said that INEC should be held responsible for the conduct of the polls in Taraba. Abubakar, counsel to Alhassan pleaded on behalf of his other witnesses that were still on their way from Taraba.

“We are still expecting 20 witnesses that are held back at Lokoja, however, we will not be able to move the court back, it is subject to the tribunal.’’ Agabi, Akuma and Akanmode, counsels to Ishiaku, PDP and INEC, all agreed that the court should adjourn and break the trial for the day.

Taraba Begins ₦5,000 Deduction for Teachers’ Permanent Identity Cards

The Taraba State Universal Basic Education Board (TSUBEB) has initiated a ₦5,000 deduction from teachers as part of arrangements for the production of Permanent Identity Cards for teachers across the state. According to UBEC, the identity cards are expected to strengthen staff records, improve security and enhance administrative efficiency in the management of teachers across Taraba State. UBEC further said the Permanent Identity Card project is also expected to assist the state government in developing an accurate and verifiable database of teachers.
