Tiv/Jukun crisis: Taraba, Benue hold stakeholders’ meeting Wednesday


Stakeholders from Taraba and Benue states have resolved to have a meeting on Wednesday (today) to discuss solutions to the Tiv/Jukun crisis, the Presidency said on Tuesday.
The renewed conflict has claimed lives, leaving valuables destroyed on both sides of the divide.
The Benue State Governor, Mr Samuel Ortom, and his Taraba State counterpart, Mr Darius Ishaku, are expected to lead teams from their respective states to the peace talks.
The Presidency explained on Tuesday that the stakeholders’ meeting was called following the appeal by President Muhammadu Buhari to the parties to sheathe their swords and embrace dialogue.
“Following the public appeal by President Muhammadu Buhari to governors of Benue and Taraba states, as well as their traditional and political leaders, for an urgent de-escalation of the crisis between the Tiv and Jukun ethnic groups, the two states have slated a meeting of stakeholders for tomorrow, Wednesday, at the Shehu Musa Yar’adua Center, Abuja.
“The meeting between the representatives of the two states has been called to resolve the lingering Tiv/Jukun crisis, which has of recent, claimed lives of innocent persons and property.
“The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha, would be attending  the meeting as a stakeholder and guarantor to assure full Federal Government backing for the implementation of resolutions arising from the meeting,” the statement by the Presidency read in part.
