Court shutsdown illigal gold mining sites in MayoKam




The Taraba State Special Court has intensified its patrol and enforcement activities at illegal gold mining sites across the state as part of efforts to protect the environment and safeguard communities from the harmful effects of illegal mining activities.

The Court, established under Executive Order No. 5 of 2023 on Environmental Protection, Public Safety and the Prohibition of Activities in Forest Reserves in Taraba State, is mandated to enforce environmental protection laws and prevent activities that contribute to environmental degradation.

During the inspection, the Court observed severe environmental degradation allegedly caused by illegal gold mining activities. The Court was also informed by joint security personnel at the site that many of the illegal miners operating in the area were from Zamfara, Katsina and Bauchi States, as well as the Republic of Cameroon.

To prevent further illegal activities and protect the environment, the Court ordered the affected mining sites to be shut down and handed them over to security agencies for enhanced monitoring and enforcement.
