Deep in Ibi Local Government Area of Taraba State, Northeast Nigeria, lies the historic Nwonyo Lake — a body of water that has for generations brought communities together through fishing, culture and celebration.

The name “Nwonyo” is traditionally associated with a hideout or habitat for large and dangerous aquatic animals. Local traditions associate the lake with creatures such as crocodiles, snakes and hippopotamuses, adding an element of mystery and excitement to the festival.
