EU to fund nutritional projects in Taraba

The European Union has set aside €20m to support nutritional and resilience projects in Taraba State by distributing high yielding crops to farmers for optimum productivity.

The project, which is to be implemented in phases through OXFAM, will commence with €10m while additional €10m will come in the second phase.

The EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Ketil Karlsen, represented by the Head of Health Nutrition and Resilience section, Mrs. Montserrat Pantaleoni Giralt, noted that the organisation was attracted to Taraba having monitored the massive investment of the government in the agricultural sector.

Giralt said the team had earlier deployed an assessment team to the state for proper evaluation of areas earmarked for the pilot scheme.

She explained that the programme was targeting about 50 per cent of women and 30 per cent of the state’s youths as people to be engaged in the pilot scheme.

She said, “The project will also train about 60,500 extension workers for easy access to the farmers and for effective implementation of the project.”

Governor Darius Ishaku, who inaugurated the project in the state, said the impact of the EU’s support to Taraba was an indication that the state was making progress in the agricultural sector, adding that it would have a direct bearing on the farmers and their families.

He said, “This project is a good development for us in Taraba and I urge our farmers to seize this opportunity to increase their productivity base through the high yielding seedling that will be distributed to the designated areas earmarked for the take-off phase.

“It is an opportunity for farmers to sell their products through a coordinated channel which is already available.”

Taraba Begins ₦5,000 Deduction for Teachers’ Permanent Identity Cards

The Taraba State Universal Basic Education Board (TSUBEB) has initiated a ₦5,000 deduction from teachers as part of arrangements for the production of Permanent Identity Cards for teachers across the state. According to UBEC, the identity cards are expected to strengthen staff records, improve security and enhance administrative efficiency in the management of teachers across Taraba State. UBEC further said the Permanent Identity Card project is also expected to assist the state government in developing an accurate and verifiable database of teachers. Such a database will provide Governor Agbu Kefas with reliable information on personnel within the basic education system and support more effective planning, monitoring and personnel management. The initiative is therefore expected to strengthen security measures, improve staff verification and provide a more efficient system for managing personnel across Taraba State’s basic education sector.
