Ishaku pledges to overhaul Taraba civil service

WorldStage Newsonline—The new governor of Taraba State, Gov Darius Dickson Ishaku has pledged to  speedily overhaul the civil service so as to reposition it for functionality.
In his inaugural address, the governor said he will examine the staffing, the anomalies and the capacity gaps in the state civil service, after which he will reconsider the funding arrangement of the ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).
He said a lot will be demanded of workers’ expertise, experiences, and pro-activeness.
“The civil servants in Taraba state must brace up to take their pride of place as the fulcrum around which the machinery of government will oscillate.
“In this regard, we shall overhaul the civil service to reposition it for functionality; we shall examine the staffing, the anomalies and the capacity gaps;
 “We shall reconsider the funding arrangement of the ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs),” he said, and added that he will “proactively engage the labour unions.”
Ishaku said, amidst the state’s potentials and natural endowments, and in spite of the promises, he has seen “the reality of a disenchanted and degenerated bureaucracy, an oversized public service, the reality of a financially indebted state and the reality of a welling army of unemployed youths.”
“With these realities stumbling over each other, it indicates a crisis. with these looming crises on the horizon, it will be impossible to attain the vision; it will be impossible to accomplish the promises; and it will be improbable to rescue Taraba, until and unless we put all hands on deck to surmount these challenges that are genuine, serious and numerous.
Ishaku sought cooperation and asked the people to make a lot of sacrifices and emotional investment in the days ahead in order to restore the soul of Taraba state, which he said was totally ruined when his predecessor Danbaba Suntai was injured in a plane crash.
The new governor regretted the air mishap that incapacitated Suntai in office, nevertheless, he paid glowing tribute to his predecessor, noting that he was aware that during the administration of Danbaba Suntai, Taraba enjoyed “a fair share of growth in the social sector.”
Worthy of note, he said, Suntai established the State University in Jalingo, facilitated the establishment of a Federal Polytechnic in Bali, and the Federal University in Wukari.
 “In terms of strategic infrastructure, roads and bridges were constructed in the state capital; 4-kilometre roads in each of the 16 local government headquarters and Yangtu Development Area. Other roads include the Jalingo-Sunkani-Garba Chede Road; the Bali-Serti-Gembu Road; the Mararraba-Baissa Road and the Sabon Gari-Karim Lamido Road.
“We shall consolidate on these and similar promising sectors, and to also explore other sectors that meet the yearnings and aspirations of our people,” he said.

Taraba Begins ₦5,000 Deduction for Teachers’ Permanent Identity Cards

The Taraba State Universal Basic Education Board (TSUBEB) has initiated a ₦5,000 deduction from teachers as part of arrangements for the production of Permanent Identity Cards for teachers across the state. According to UBEC, the identity cards are expected to strengthen staff records, improve security and enhance administrative efficiency in the management of teachers across Taraba State. UBEC further said the Permanent Identity Card project is also expected to assist the state government in developing an accurate and verifiable database of teachers.
