Benue, Taraba Govts Charged To Sustain Dialogue On Boundary Demarcation



The federal government has urged Benue and Taraba states government to sustain the dialogue designed to explore peaceful resolution of boundary dispute between the two states.
Director general, National Boundary Commission of Nigeria, Alhaji Adamu Audu Adaji made the appeal in Abuja yesterday, during a joint meeting of officials of the Benue/Taraba  interstate boundary.
He said that the vice president, Yemi Osinbajo has already directed that work be resuscitated on the boundaries, saying that to achieve success, the two states need to sensitize their people and sustain dialogue. “Now, our appeal to the states is to sustain the bilateral dialogue they have been having and sensitize the communities involved so that they will understand the concept of boundary.
“Boundary is not intended to be a war, it is just to show the limit and of course, a boundary cannot prevent you from your property across. So we want to appeal to communities to support this idea so that we can get the boundaries once and for all.”
He added that the present administration at both the federal and state levels are committed and determined to bring the impasse to a permanent end.
The deputy governor of Benue/Chairman, Benue State Boundary Committee, Benson Abounu assured maximum support to the commission in their attempt to embark on the demarcation exercise.
He stressed that the boundary is for administrative convenience, adding that there has to be sensitization and mutual agreement between the two states in the interest of all. “We need to get the people in the border communities to be in tune with this exercise. They must take boundary demarcation not as an exercise of war but purely for administrative convenience.”
On his part, the deputy governor of Taraba /Chairman, Taraba State Boundary Commission, Hon. Haruna Manu said the best time to resolve the issue is now, going by the cordial relationship between the governors of the two states.
