The Miyyetti Allah Association of Nigeria,
Taraba State branch, said yesterday that rustlers killed 164 herdsmen
and stole 17,000 cattle between 2013 and now.
Chairman of the association, Alhaji Mafindi Danburam, while speaking with Daily Trust in Jalingo, said out of the figure, only 700 cows were recovered and that no rustler was arrested by security agents.
He said the highest cases of cattle rustling were recorded in Wukari, Gassol ,Bali,Takum, Donga and Ibbi Local Government Areas.
He said the association had written several letters of complaints to security agencies in the state and the federal authorities over the activities of cattle rustlers, but that the problem was yet to be addressed.
The chairman accused Tivs and Jukuns of being behind most of the cattle thefts in the state.
“There were instances where our members whose cows were stolen were prevented from tracing the rustlers to their hide outs in Wukari area’’, he said.
Alhaji Mafindi lamented that cattle rustling is the next major security threat after Boko Haram, ‘‘because it touches the livelihood of herdsmen as well as the economy of the country’’.
The chairman lamented that cattle routes in the state were converted to farmlands.
He said forceful takeover of cattle routes and encroachment into grazing reserves were responsible for farmers-herdsmen clashes in the state. He urged the state government to compel those occupying such routes to vacate them.
