Taraba: Tribunal receives 21 petitions

Twenty one petitions have been filed at the Taraba State Election Petitions Tribunal. The three-man tribunal under the chairmanship of Justice Eyewumi Oritsejafor, on Monday, began sitting in Jalingo, the state capital.

Delivering a speech at the inaugural ceremony held at the Magistrates’/Appeal Court, Mile Six, Jalingo, Justice Oritsejafor said 21 petitions had been filed before the tribunal. Justice Oritsejafor said three petitions were filed against the senate elections results declared by INEC, four for the House of Representatives, while 14 were received for the House of Assembly.

He reminded counsels to various parties that election petition matters were time-bound, saying the tribunal had 180 days within which to deliver its final judgment.

“The record at our disposal reveals that results of the National Assembly elections in Taraba State were declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on February 25 and 27, while those of the state assembly elections were declared on March10, 11 and 12,” he said. Justice Oritsejafor said the tribunal was already in the third month since the National Assembly election results were declared and in the second month in the case of the House of Assembly.

Justice Oritsejafor noted that the number of petitions filed before the tribunal underscored the need for expeditious hearing and determination of all petitions within the time frame provided for the determination of the petitions in the Electoral Act. He, therefore, asked journalists to be responsible while reporting the proceedings of the tribunal.

“You must avoid reporting false and sensational news; there must be no room for fake news,” he said.

Taraba Begins ₦5,000 Deduction for Teachers’ Permanent Identity Cards

The Taraba State Universal Basic Education Board (TSUBEB) has initiated a ₦5,000 deduction from teachers as part of arrangements for the production of Permanent Identity Cards for teachers across the state. According to UBEC, the identity cards are expected to strengthen staff records, improve security and enhance administrative efficiency in the management of teachers across Taraba State. UBEC further said the Permanent Identity Card project is also expected to assist the state government in developing an accurate and verifiable database of teachers. Such a database will provide Governor Agbu Kefas with reliable information on personnel within the basic education system and support more effective planning, monitoring and personnel management. The initiative is therefore expected to strengthen security measures, improve staff verification and provide a more efficient system for managing personnel across Taraba State’s basic education sector.
