Jukun/Tiv crisis: Taraba Council boss escape assassination

The caretaker chairman of Donga Local Government Area in Taraba State, Hon. Nashuka Ipeyen, yesterday narrowly escaped assassination by militias suspected to be Jukun who were protesting his stance for peace and support for the security agencies, leading to the arrest of some of their members by security agencies in the area.

Nashuka told journalists that the incident happened when he was holding a meeting with stakeholders in the local government to restore peace in the area.

Nashuka said it took the efforts of the military and Mobile policemen deployed in the area to keep the peace to rescue him and others from the lodge where the meeting was being held.

The council Chairman further explained that his house was vandalized and looted by the militias after their failed attempt to lynch him.

“The Jukun militias attacked me yesterday that I am supporting the military and Tiv people. I was, however, rescued alongside others.

“I am now in the middle of a crisis, the Tiv are accusing me of supporting my Jukun tribal people, my Jukun people are accusing me of supporting the security. But all I want is for the crisis to stop. We don’t need crises, what we need is peace,” he said.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP David Misal, said the command was yet to be briefed on the incident.

Taraba Begins ₦5,000 Deduction for Teachers’ Permanent Identity Cards

The Taraba State Universal Basic Education Board (TSUBEB) has initiated a ₦5,000 deduction from teachers as part of arrangements for the production of Permanent Identity Cards for teachers across the state. According to UBEC, the identity cards are expected to strengthen staff records, improve security and enhance administrative efficiency in the management of teachers across Taraba State. UBEC further said the Permanent Identity Card project is also expected to assist the state government in developing an accurate and verifiable database of teachers. Such a database will provide Governor Agbu Kefas with reliable information on personnel within the basic education system and support more effective planning, monitoring and personnel management. The initiative is therefore expected to strengthen security measures, improve staff verification and provide a more efficient system for managing personnel across Taraba State’s basic education sector.
