Lassa Fever Update: 4 deaths in Taraba

Four persons have been confirmed dead in Taraba State just as Kaduna State announced the death of 36-year-old man on Monday following the outbreak of Lassa fever in the country.

According to the Commissioner for Health in Taraba State, Dr. Innocent Vakkai said that the ministry has recorded 15 suspected cases of Lassa fever, with only five, found to be positive.

“Four out of these five people that test positive to Lassa fever has died as most of the cases came from six local government areas of Bali, Gashaka, Gassol, Ardo-Kola, Jalingo and Ibi.”

He disclosed that the state government has activated its surveillance system for more case detection and proper treatment.

“Efforts are ongoing to create awareness for residents of the state to enlighten them about the symptoms of the disease.

The commissioner regretted that challenges such as late reporting of patients to hospitals and difficult terrains of the state have remained major banes to the management of the disease in Taraba.

Vakkai disclosed that the Federal Ministry of Health has promised to provide testing machines and distribute regionally with Taraba, as the test place for the North-East.

He noted that the state government may acquire its set of equipment to reduce waiting time between suspicion and confirmation.

Taraba Begins ₦5,000 Deduction for Teachers’ Permanent Identity Cards

The Taraba State Universal Basic Education Board (TSUBEB) has initiated a ₦5,000 deduction from teachers as part of arrangements for the production of Permanent Identity Cards for teachers across the state. According to UBEC, the identity cards are expected to strengthen staff records, improve security and enhance administrative efficiency in the management of teachers across Taraba State. UBEC further said the Permanent Identity Card project is also expected to assist the state government in developing an accurate and verifiable database of teachers. Such a database will provide Governor Agbu Kefas with reliable information on personnel within the basic education system and support more effective planning, monitoring and personnel management. The initiative is therefore expected to strengthen security measures, improve staff verification and provide a more efficient system for managing personnel across Taraba State’s basic education sector.
