More Taraba farmers now engage in dry season farming

There is a surge in the number of farmers now engaged in dry season farming in Taraba State. An investigation by North East Trust  revealed that more than 100,000 farmers are now into dry season farming across seven local government areas of the state. 

 The local government areas are Karm-Lamido, Lau, Arddo-Kola, Ibbi, Gassol, Donga, Jalingo, Wukari, Yorro and Bali.

Our correspondent reports that they number jumped as many of them picked interest in rice farming taking advantage of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Anchor Borrowers’ Programme. 

Under the programme benefitting farmers receive farm inputs such as improved seeds, fertilizer, water pumps and pesticides as loan.

Confirming the development the state’s Chairman of the Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN), Malam Tanko Bobbo Andame, said the association had registered 30,000 members to benefit from the programme.

 He told North East Trust that Taraba state was now one of the leading rice producing states in the country.

 He said 16,000 farmers were provided with farm inputs under the Anchor Borrowers Programme for the 2020 dry season farming activities. Mallam Tanko Andame stated that with the incentives given to rice farmers in the state, more farmers would key into rice farming during both wet and dry seasons.


He said with the availability of vast fertile land and all year round running rivers, the state has  the capacity to produce half of the nation’s demand for rice.
