Kidnapping may slow down farming in Taraba this season



High rate of kidnapping in Taraba rural areas may likely slow down farming activities in the state.

Daily Trust finding revealed that already, kidnappers are terrorising rural communities, who are mostly farmers.

Areas, according to our findings, that are being terrorised by kidnappers include parts of Gassol, Ardo-Kola, Bali, Karim-Lamido and Lau local government areas of the state where a number of people were kidnapped either on their way to the farm or while working on the farms.

It was gathered that many farmers are afraid to go to their farms located far away from their homes.

A farmer in Yalwan Tau, in Ardo-Kola Local Government Area, Malam Jibir Musa, told our reporter that it is very dangerous to go far away from the village to farm because of kidnappers.

He said most of the farms in the area are located far from the community and now kidnapping is at an alarming rate and the menace was discouraging people from going to the farm

Musa said unless the problem is tackled farming activities may slow down this season because many farmers are afraid to go to farms

In Gassol Local Government Area, the situation is the same because farmers were abducted last season and now another farming season is approaching.

A farmer in Mutumbiyu, Alhaji Haruna Kaka, said the rate of kidnapping was posing a threat to farmers, especially those that have their farm in remote locations.

He said some that recorded good yields in their farms were kidnapped and forced to sell their produce to pay  the ransom.

However, ASP David Misal, spokesman  of the Taraba police command, said the command was doing its best to address kidnapping and other crimes in both urban and rural areas of the state.

He said as part of its efforts, many of kidnappers have been arrested by the police.
