Taraba government inaugurates committee on Lau crisis




The Taraba State government has set up a 17-man Peace and True Reconciliation Committee to reconcile all ethnic groups in Lau local government area who have been fighting one another. The Chairman of the committee, Alhaji Kongo Abbare, said already members of the committee have toured all parts of the local government so as to bring all the warring sides to a roundtable.

The chairman told North East Trust that the state government was worried over killings and destruction of property as a result of lingering communal conflict in the area.
He said the committee had sat with different ethnic groups and so far those that the committee met  have indicated their readiness to embrace peace.

According to him the committee is committed to ensuring true reconciliation and dialogue between ethnic groups in the area in order to have sustainable peace. He said the Yangdan tribe in Mayo lope has agreed to allow Hausa-Fulani, who have relocated out of the area in the wake of crisis, to return to their homes.
The chairman also expressed the need for government to assist those that were displaced to rebuild their houses destroyed during the crisis. According to him majority of the people are farmers while many others are pastoralists who  lost their animals and farm produce and, therefore, needed government’s support and assistance to restart their businesses. He said there was also the need for the state government to  discuss with the Adamawa state government on the need to linvolve neighbouring communities in Numan and Mayo_Belwa local government areas in the peace and reconciliation effort. Alhaji Kongo Abbare also expressed the need for Taraba and Adamawa States to address the issue of attacks on travellers plying Numan-Jalingo road which has been going on for a long time He said the committee, as directed by the state government, would continue to go round and dialogue with communities and other stakeholders to find a lasting solution to the problems.
