Stakeholders urge youths in Taraba, Benue crisis to sheath swords



Stakeholders have urged youths in the recent inter-ethnic crisis between communities in Taraba and Benue states to, as a matter of urgency, sheathe their swords and embrace peace.
Also, the stakeholders, at the joint security meeting, which took place yesterday in Wukari Local Council of Taraba State, said the need for the communities and security operatives to collaborate to achieve an enduring peace could no longer be over-emphasised.
The meeting, led by the Acting Governor of Benue State, Benson Abounu and the Deputy Governor of Taraba State, Haruna Manu, The Guardian learnt, had in attendance security chiefs, traditional rulers and top government officials from the two aforementioned states.
In a communique jointly signed by the number two citizens of both states, stressed the need for the Tiv and Jukun people who are indigenes of Taraba and Benue states to be loyal to the “political and traditional leadership of the two states and accept the indigeneship of the state they belong.”
“As a result of the crisis , the two states have been urged to set up a peace committee to go round the affected communities to assess and determine the level of destruction.“Both states agreed to halt wanton destruction of lives and property. “The leaders of the two states are to map out the relevant strategies that would allow the resolutions to see the light of the day. “There is need for full and strict implementation of all the resolutions of past communiques,” the communiqué stated.
